Dr. Jane Mortley Bsc, PhD, MRCSLT, MASLTIP
Jane has specialised in the field of aphasia since graduating from City University in 1988. She has experience working clinically in both London Hospitals and in the Bristol Area. Jane has always had a keen interest in the use of technology in the treatment of aphasia, and is passionate about how they can help to provide long term therapy. She joined ‘the Aphasia Computer Team’ at the ‘Speech Therapy Research Unit’ at Frenchay hospital in Bristol, to conduct research under the guidance of Professor Pam Enderby. Jane was awarded her PhD in 1998 for a study into the clinical effectiveness of delivering aphasia therapy using computers. She continued her research interest with post-doctorate research sponsored by the Stroke Association into the effectiveness of delivering therapy ‘remotely’ over the internet.
Jane joined Steps Consulting Ltd to develop the next generation of computer-based aphasia therapy tools. StepbyStep software version 2.5 was released in 2006 and followed by the release of StepByStep version 3.0 in 2008, and StepByStep 4.5 in 2009. Jane runs a small clinical independent practice, treating clients both locally and at a distance using web-conferencing. She provides consultancy for a number of research projects based on the use of computers in aphasia therapy. She also runs regular training courses in the use of computers in the treatment of aphasia for therapist working in the NHS and independent sector.
